{"id":82,"date":"2009-12-19T20:07:03","date_gmt":"2009-12-19T20:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kelathavihara.org\/kv\/2009\/12\/19\/how-to-live\/"},"modified":"2009-12-19T20:07:03","modified_gmt":"2009-12-19T20:07:03","slug":"how-to-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kelathavihara.org\/kv\/2009\/12\/19\/how-to-live\/","title":{"rendered":"How to live"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201c HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT ANXIETY \u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BY NAYAKA MYITTHA SAYADAW, VEN.U VASAVA<\/span><\/h1>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MAHASI MEDITATION CENTRE, <st1:place><st1:city>YANGON<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region>MYANMAR<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">Today, I will deliver a Dhamma talk on living a life free from anxiety or grief.&nbsp; This troubled state of mind in the pali language is known as <em>Soka<\/em>.&nbsp; According to the Abhidhamma,it is<em> Domanassa Cetasika-dukkha-vedana<\/em>, a mentally painful or disagreeable feeling.&nbsp; Grief or anxiety is always associated with antipathy and grudge, and is therefore karmically unwholesome.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">Everyone wishes to live peacefully and happily, free from anxiety or grief.&nbsp; Yet, they are inevitably afflicted with grief somehow or other in their lifetime.&nbsp; When we scrutinize the root cause, it is found that people are immersed in a woeful state due to one of five forms of loss:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><em>\u00d1ati Byassana<\/em> \u2013 loss of kin or relative<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><em>Bhoga Byassana<\/em> \u2013 loss of wealth or means<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><em>Roga Byassana<\/em> \u2013 loss of health due to illness<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><em>Ditthi Byassana<\/em> \u2013 loss of right view<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><em>Sila Byassana<\/em> \u2013 loss of morality <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">When one encounters any of these five forms of loss, one is overwhelmed by anxiety or grief.&nbsp; Other causes of anxiety or grief include the four <em>Asavas<\/em> or corruptions:&nbsp; 1. delusion&nbsp; 2. craving&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3. wrong view and&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  4. ignorance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">It is most important to know how to expel grief or anxiety, and it cannot be done through scientific experiments.&nbsp; It can only be achieved by the Lord Buddha&#8217;s Dhamma.&nbsp; The Lord Buddha has advocated the sure way to eradicate grief in his admonishment of the <em>Satipatth\u00e4na Sutta<\/em>, or The Four Foundations of Mindfulness:&nbsp; Oh! Dear sons and daughters! &#8220;<em>Ekayano<\/em>.&#8221;&nbsp; There is no other way, <em>Satipatth\u00e4na<\/em> Meditation is the one and only way for you all to attain <em>Nibbana<\/em>, deliverance from anxiety, grief and suffering.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">Now let us study someone who made use of the Lord Buddha&#8217;s admonishment to eliminate grief as recorded in the Canonical texts.&nbsp; The incident took place in the Indian Capital city of <st1:city><st1:place><em>Rajagaha<\/em><\/st1:place><\/st1:city> over 2500 years ago.&nbsp; At that time, the Lord Buddha was residing at the King <em>Bimbisara<\/em> <em>maharaja&#8217;s Veluvana<\/em> garden monastery.&nbsp; It was the custom of the laity to seek solace from the Buddha, Dahmma and Sangha whenever they were afflicted with calamities.&nbsp; One day, King <em>Bimbisara&#8217;s<\/em> youthful son, prince <em>Abhaya Rajakumara<\/em> appeared before the Lord Buddha.&nbsp; He bowed down in front of Lord Buddha, wailing and imploring to quench his grief stricken heart at the death of his beloved dancing girl.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">The accident happened at the height of a party for the youthful prince given to honor his victorious achievements on the battle field. The King father granted his son seven days of sovereign power including all the luxuries and grandeur.&nbsp; On the last day of festivities, while the young beautiful dancer was charming the youthful prince through her art and craft, she dropped dead at the climax of the garden revelry.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">He was so tormented by this harsh catastrophe that he felt as if his heart and soul were burning under a scorching sun.&nbsp; In the midst of this tragedy, it occurred to him that the Lord Buddha was the only refuge which could alleviate his suffering.&nbsp; In so thinking, he went to the Lord Buddha immediately after the cremation of the young dancing girl.&nbsp; &nbsp;On arrival at the Lord Buddha&#8217;s monastery, he instantly entreated the Lord Buddha to extinguish his burning heart.&nbsp; With a sweet compassionate voice, the Lord Buddha consoled him:&nbsp; &#8220;Oh!
